Before hiring any contractor to do any type of pool work always investigate to make sure your contractor is legit and is licensed, insured, and listed with the BBB. You can view our and other contractors information directly by going to our why us section.

Below are some steps to help you start planning your backyard escape:

Step One: Survey Your Yard
  • Where are you going to put your pool?
  • Are there any easement restrictions?
  • Do you have a minimum of 10 feet of access? (If not get permission from neighbor)
  • Is there a grade to your yard?
  • Is dewatering required?
  • Retaining walls
  • Step up or down to pool from home?
  • Septic?
  • Utilities?

Step Two: Select the Options You Want in Your New Pool
  • Choose the shape of your pool.
  • Choose the size of your pool.
  • Choose the color of your pool.
  • Choose the tile options (available only with TRU-Tile).
  • Choose the the liner you want.
  • Choose the options you want to include with your pool package.

Step Three: Additional Cost Considerations
  • LANDSCAPING: Building a pool in your backyard is major construction. There will be damage done around the perimeter of the pool and on and near the access-way. At a minimum these areas will need repaired. Drainage away from the pool will be necessary, and depending on elevation, a retaining wall may need to be installed.
  • FENCING: You will be required to install some type of fencing around your pool.
  • CONCRETE: You may want to have a larger patio area put in prior to having the yard repaired.
  • LIGHTING: Do you want any additional lighting installed?
  • GAS LINE: There will be additional cost for the gas line with a heater on your pool.
  • TREES OR OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS: If they are located where the pool is going, they will need to be removed.
  • UTILITIES: May need to be relocated if they are too close to the pool.
  • ELECTRICAL: Long distances from the equipment pad to the house or long runs inside the house for the automated control system can result in additional charges.

Step Four: Common Information to Secure a Building Permit for an In-ground Swimming Pool
  • You will need to supply Heritage Pools, LLC a plat of survey to help determine:
    • Legal description of property
    • Pool location
    • Pool distances off the house and off the lot lines
    • Any underground utilities located on plat
  • You must get access permission if access-way is using another person’s property.
  • Where are you locating the equipment pad?
  • Where are you locating the in-house remote keypad?
  • Where are you locating key switch for automatic pool cover (if applicable)?
  • What township do you live in?
  • What type of fence are you installing (height, location, etc.)?
  • Who will install the fence?
  • Are there any subdivision restrictions, alarm restrictions, fencing restrictions, etc.?
  • Do you have to have H.O.A. approval before applying for permit?
  • Some townships require the customer to install certain types of door alarm systems on the house. Information on what will be installed will be required.
  • Where are the septic and well locations? (Must have for health department approval.)

Step Five: Answering Common Questions
  • It will take about 4 weeks to install the pool; however, every day it rains can add to the installation time.
  • Customers need to supply information in a timely fashion because:
    • Fence contractors are booked many weeks in advance.
    • Permits can take up to a month for municipalities to process (some countys are up to 4-6 months)
  • Customer needs to select the location of:
    • Equipment
    • Keyswitches
  • The customer must provide the water to fill the pool.
  • Upon completion of the liner installation, a vacuum must run through the night while the pool is filling and it is imperative that the customer stays out of the pool for a minimum of 72 hours because the floor is soft.
  • The customer will be responsible for building retaining walls when necessary.
  • There will be drain tile and occasionally concrete drains the customer will need to extend beyond the pool.
  • Yard will be left with a rough grade, additional grading may be required.
  • Minimum of 10-12 ft. wide path from the pool to the road is necessary.
  • Undivided attention for instructional is essential.
